For many years, Senior Community Centers has served as a collaborative partner for local schools and universities to help train the next generation of professionals in social work, geriatrics, civic engagement, advocacy and resource management.
Once again, we are proud to finish another school year with a caring and energetic group of interns from the School of Social Work at both San Diego State University and University of Southern California.
(Senior Community Centers Class of 2013)
Students gain valuable experience and the seniors we serve benefit from new research and hands-on studies. Internships may even lead to jobs as was the case for Vanesa (back row, middle), a recent graduate of San Diego State University School of Social Work with a major in Social Work and a minor in Gerontology.
“Now that I graduated from San Diego State University, Senior Community Centers gave me the opportunity to become part of the family and I am working as a Home Delivered Meals Support Services Coordinator. My internship at Senior Community Centers gave me the opportunity to understand the elderly and I learned how to advocate for high risk seniors.
One of many inspiring moments was working with a senior who just visited Senior Community Centers for the first time. He had to spend most of his Social Security money on a hotel room with nothing left for food or transportation. I referred him to Senior Community Centers’ Homeless Prevention Program and gave him a bag of canned soups so he could eat that day. He kissed the bag and thanked me because he won’t be alone anymore. I’ve seen him come back to the Center and socialize with others. He looks so happy now.”
Please join me in congratulating all recent graduates and wishing each and every one best of luck for a great future in this challenging and rewarding social services environment.
