We had a total of 109 seniors from the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center (organized through our Civic Engagement Group) at the Council Chambers voicing their concern about the lack of funding for senior meals. Our group was polite, articulate and forceful.
We had another packed house in the dining room at the West Wellness Center watching the coverage live on television. According to staff at the Wellness Center, you could have heard a pin drop as the proceedings were taking place. The response of our seniors showed me once again how vital these members of our community are to bring about positive change.
I also want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the phenomenal job done by SCC staff and interns in helping organize the seniors. Amy Harmon, Jared McCannell, Laura Stevens (our intern from SDSU), Enrique Gonzalez (who was here at 5am to accommodate television) and Gloria Torain deserve huge accolades. Our PR team from Scatena Daniels (Arika and Denise) did a fantastic job generating coverage on Channels 6 (every half hour between 5am and 8am), Channel 10, Channel 39, Univision (Spanish), KPBS, the U-T and the Op-Ed in Voice of San Diego.
Here are a few of the media placements:
While we did not get the Council to change its mind, I think the victory we achieved by empowering our seniors is better than any dollars we could have received. This was a proud day for Senior Community Centers – we have firmly cemented ourselves as the voice for seniors in San Diego.
